Our Story / History
Formation of Wairakei-based Marist Team
A Marist team was established in Wairakei in 1986 after a unanimous decision to sever ties with the Hawke's Bay Rugby Football Union and join the King Country Rugby Football Union.
Closure of College Old Boys Marist Rugby Football Club
The predecessor to Taupō Marist, "College Old Boys Marist Rugby Football Club," folded in 1999. The club was based in Waitahanui and chaired by Te Reowhakotahi Charles Wall (NZOM).
Rebirth of Taupō Marist Inc.
Taupō Marist Inc. was re-established in 2019 following a suggestion from Josh Standen (KCRU) to revive Marist representation in the Taupō region after a NZ Marist tournament in 2018. Blair Irvin and Preston Leaf led the initiative.
First KCRU Competition Game
With the help of several senior players the pre-season saw Taupō Marist Inc take on Marist St. Michaels and Te Awamutu Marist in The Inaugural Marist Game Of 3 Halves held on 2nd March 2019 In Rotorua. Taupō Marist played their first games wearing green and blue striped band jerseys kindly donated to the club by Hastings Marist. Taupō Marist played their first official King Country Rugby Union (KCRU) competition game against Waitete, wearing their newly sponsored green, blue, and white jerseys. This team is celebrated as the club's "Pioneer Team".
Taupō Marist Junior Rugby
In 2019 Taupō Marist Inc also trialed 3 junior teams affiliated to Taupō Junior Rugby which rapidly increased to 5 grade teams in the following years with the guidance and support of Junior Rugby Coordinator Maureen Broadbent and Coach Shane Hancock.
The Pompallier Tournament
In 2021 for the first time ever Taupō Marist Junior Rugby competed in the annual Marist Junior Rugby Competition The Pompallier Tournament, Hosted by Marist Whakatane. saw U9 and U13 representing Taupō Marist.

Many of these pioneer players still represent Taupo Marist today proving to be fierce competitors on the KCRU Premier Competition. Ron Byers Tropy & KCRU Premier Competition Finalist
Despite losing the final to a fierce and well drilled Taumaranui Districts, 2024 was a breakout year for the Taupo Marist Premier Team. Firstly winning the Ron Byers round robin competition to take home the trophy and then secondly having a team with an average age in the early 20's the future is looking bright for Taupo Marist Rugby! Bring on 2025!
